{"id":5781,"date":"2019-10-29T06:32:24","date_gmt":"2019-10-29T10:32:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.silvercentury.org\/?p=5781"},"modified":"2019-10-31T08:19:27","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T12:19:27","slug":"rowing-north-against-ageism-sexism-and-misogyny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/78.142.243.82\/~silvercentury\/2019\/10\/rowing-north-against-ageism-sexism-and-misogyny\/","title":{"rendered":"Rowing North Against Ageism, Sexism and Misogyny"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mary Pipher is a psychologist who specializes in women\u2014adolescents in her first bestseller, <em>Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls <\/em>(1994), and now those entering old age in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marypipher.com\/women-rowing-north\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women Rowing North: Navigating Life\u2019s Currents and Flourishing As We Age<\/a>.<\/em> Published in January 2019, it too became a bestseller, not only because Pipher is a gifted clinician and storyteller but because her message, like mine, resonates deeply with what our readers know: age confers voice, self-knowledge, contentment. We like being older.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cContrary to cultural stereotypes,\u201d writes Pipher, \u201cmost women become increasingly happy after age 55, with their peak of happiness at the very end of life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s despite having to contend with the misogyny, ageism and sexism that reduce us to sexless, voiceless, shapeless and useless caricatures of our richly textured selves.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOld women in America suffer a social disease. For us,&nbsp;<\/span><b>ageism may be an even more <\/b><b>serious challenge than aging<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Pipher writes (emphasis mine).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misogyny is dislike, contempt or ingrained prejudice against women. Pair it with ageism, which we are just beginning to confront, and the full truth is immensely painful. But we have choices and ever-louder voices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat women mean when they say, \u2018I\u2019m not old,\u2019 is, \u2018I won\u2019t accept the ideas the culture has about me,\u2019\u201d Pipher writes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we have courage and will, we have agency. In Pipher\u2019s words, \u201cBecause our current cultural stories about how we should behave are useless, we have great freedom to throw off our chains and resist definition by the broader culture.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do we do it?&nbsp; Pipher proposes three main steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFirst, we can take responsibility for educating other people about both the negative stereotypes and the reality of our lives. We can resolve not to criticize ourselves or other women or make negative remarks about aging or appearance \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe can be advocates for women of all ages, working to create the institutions and policies we require to live healthy, social, and productive lives throughout the life span.\u201d This can take all kinds of forms, from writing letters and lobbying to protesting and \u201cgrab[bing] the attention of the press\u201d by using music, art and theater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFinally, we can converse with people of all ages \u2026 Younger and older women working together is a great way to facilitate mutual respect, empathy, and understanding.\u201d The goal is political change that will benefit the women who follow in our footsteps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no surprise my call to women, set out in this&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/10\/style\/women-looks-ageism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opinion piece,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> covers very similar ground:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tap into what we know: growing older enriches us.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn to look more generously at each other and ourselves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reject old-vs-young ways of thinking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come together at all ages and talk about this stuff.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s not delude ourselves: this is the work of a lifetime. We need to embark on it with others and across generations. But none of this stigma is \u201cnatural,\u201d and none of it is fixed. A movement to end ageism is underway around the world, and\u2014again, unsurprisingly\u2014women are leading it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have a choice: we can keep digging the hole deeper, or we can throw away the damn shovel. We can move, if we have the will and the desire and the vision, from competing to collaborating. We can turn it from a conversation about scarcity and loss to one about empowerment and equity.
