{"id":6365,"date":"2020-12-22T07:15:32","date_gmt":"2020-12-22T12:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.silvercentury.org\/?p=6365"},"modified":"2020-12-22T07:15:32","modified_gmt":"2020-12-22T12:15:32","slug":"age-justice-requires-disability-justice-and-vice-versa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/78.142.243.82\/~silvercentury\/2020\/12\/age-justice-requires-disability-justice-and-vice-versa\/","title":{"rendered":"Age Justice Requires Disability Justice\u2014and Vice Versa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A terrific special section of the <em>New York Times<\/em> [in July] was devoted to the 30th anniversary of the passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no mention of age or ageism<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would be convenient to attribute that omission to the fact that most older people are not disabled (true but complicated). But you sure wouldn\u2019t know it from the way the media and public health advisories turn the vast and varied 60+ population into \u201cthe (frail\/vulnerable\/dependent) elderly.\u201d And it\u2019s not the real reason. The real reason is that we act as though people with disabilities don\u2019t grow old, and olders never become disabled\u2014and an ageist and ableist culture gives us cover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That has to change. Aging and disability are&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;the same. But they overlap in ethically and tactically important ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>There are a lot of us, and our numbers are growing.&nbsp;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As modern medicine saves people who once would have died, more disabled people are reaching adulthood and beyond. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/disabilityandhealth\/infographic-disability-impacts-all.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One out of four American adults has some type of disability.<\/span><\/a><b>&nbsp;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disability rates rise steeply after age 75\u2014the fastest-growing age cohort. Population aging is a permanent, global, demographic trend. Some impairment awaits us all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>We all face stigma, and we\u2019re all biased<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both olders and people with disabilities encounter discrimination and prejudice. Many olders refuse to use wheelchairs or walkers, even when it means&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never leaving home<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because the stigma is so great. People with disabilities are as ageist as everyone else. When an acoustic neuroma destroyed most of [my] hearing in one ear, I caught myself thinking, \u201cAt least it\u2019s sexy, brain-tumor deafness, not sad, old-person deafness\u201d\u2014making me both ageist&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;ableist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ignoring the overlap between ageism and ableism leaves stigma unchallenged and rules out collective activism.&nbsp;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A mandate of the disability justice movement is to stand in solidarity with other marginalized groups, as the Black Panthers did in 1977 by bringing supplies and cooked meals to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/22\/us\/504-sit-in-disability-rights.html\">100 disabled protestors<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who occupied the San Francisco HEW offices for almost a month,&nbsp;and as the Black Lives Matter movement is doing now by supporting the rights of transgender and Indigenous people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSpeak up not only for your own disability, but for invisible disabilities and disabled people of color as well,\u201d urges activist Alice Wong, the author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disability Visibility <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2020)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;Speak up, too, for older people with disabilities, who have much to learn from younger p.w.d. about adapting, identity and pride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as realizing the potential of the disability justice movement means joining forces with age activists, being anti-ageist means being anti-ableist. For most of us\u2014including me, so stay tuned to this blog\u2014that means learning more about disability. Watch <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thischairrocks.com\/2020\/04\/17\/6-reasons-to-watch-crip-camp\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crip Camp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/24\/arts\/disability-movies-books-tv.html\">learn about disability culture<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;Being anti-ageist also means being anti-racist, which right now means supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. Because achieving equal rights for everyone\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everyone!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014means ending white supremacy. Because growing old is a privilege denied to many Black, Brown and disabled people.
