Age and age discrimination have never gotten more media coverage, especially in the wake of President Biden\u2019s announcement that he\u2019s running for reelection. If there\u2019s anyone who should be delighted, it\u2019s me. I\u2019m in the age and ageism business after all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, it\u2019s making me mad.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of the headlines are alarmist clickbait. (\u201cBiden Would End His Second Term at 86. What Could That Mean for His Brain and Body?\u201d) Many of the stories, like that one, which ran the in the <\/span>New York Times<\/a>,<\/span><\/i> and another that ran in the <\/span>Wall Street Journal<\/a>,<\/span><\/i> say little more than what I and countless geriatricians have to say: if you\u2019ve seen one octogenarian, you\u2019ve seen <\/span>one<\/span><\/i> octogenarian.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are <\/span>countless reasons<\/span><\/a> to ignore age when it comes to choosing political candidates. More consequentially, these stories distract us from real issues that actually matter. Climate disasters. The economy. Racism. School shootings. Police brutality. Forced pregnancy. World War III. Why obsess over <\/span>age<\/span><\/i>? It\u2019s an ignorant, biased, costly smoke screen.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have a policy of not following elections until the calendar year in which they take place. Most of the coverage up until then is side-show stuff…. If that\u2019s too much to ask, how about holding the media accountable for the coverage we\u2014and the real issues\u2014deserve?
