People with more positive feelings about aging\u2014fact- rather than fear-based, that is\u2014walk faster, heal quicker, live longer, and are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0191004\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less likely to develop dementia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even if they carry the gene that predisposes them to the disease<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of the research has been conducted by Yale\u2019s Becca Levy, the author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking the Age Code: How Your Beliefs About Aging Determine How Long and Well You Live <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2022). Her latest finding, published on April 12 in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2803740\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of the American Medical Association<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;is remarkable: positive age beliefs don\u2019t just help prevent cognitive decline.&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They can reverse it<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and improve memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists tracked 1,716 individuals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aged 65 and up, for 12 years, to see if they could predict who would experience MCI <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Mild Cognitive Impairment), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as well as who was most likely to recover from it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MCI refers to \u201cmild changes in a number of cognitive functions, including memory and attention,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/aging\/thinking-positively-aging-memory-cognition-rcna79513\">Levy explains<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s a performance-based measure, and cut-off points have been established and validated.\u201d Participants were tested on how well they performed at various cognitive tasks at different points over the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> years. People with low scores who felt good about aging were&nbsp;more likely to return to the \u201cnormal cognition\u201d range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does feeling good about aging seem like a reach? If so, it\u2019s because we live in an ageist culture that barrages us with negative messages about growing old\u2014like the myth that cognitive decline is inevitable. Confronting ageism means changing the culture. That\u2019s why Levy is \u201cvery interested in social movements to overcome ageism.\u201d That\u2019s why I do what I do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many aspects of aging aren\u2019t under our control, but we&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;control our attitudes. Unlearning isn\u2019t easy, but it\u2019s free and it\u2019s doable. How about aiming for an&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accurate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;understanding of the years ahead\u2014an attitude based on facts rather than fears? Based on an understanding of where the myths and stereotypes come from, and what purpose they serve. Based on the abundant evidence that late life is a time of growth and purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where to begin?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levy recommends keeping an age<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">belief journal for a week: recording how age is represented on television and in social media and conversations, and whether and how olders are part of the conversation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noodle around the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oldschool.info\/\">Old School Anti-Ageism Clearinghouse<\/a>:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;hundreds of free resources to educate people about aging and ageism.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read about Levy\u2019s study showing that more accurate age beliefs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thischairrocks.com\/2018\/02\/15\/are-you-ageist-that-makes-you-more-likely-to-get-alzheimers\/\"> protect against Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out a 2022 National Poll on Healthy Aging, published on June 15 by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2793359\">JAMA Open Network<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;that linked exposure to \u201ceveryday ageism\u201d to higher levels of mental and physical health problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflect on your own attitudes toward age and aging. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thischairrocks.com\/2015\/03\/04\/want-older-people-to-be-healthy-end-ageism\/\">Ageism harms our health<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;and we can\u2019t challenge bias unless we\u2019re aware of it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you aspire to a long and healthy life, it\u2019s worth it.
