{"id":7594,"date":"2024-03-26T07:26:53","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T11:26:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.silvercentury.org\/?p=7594"},"modified":"2024-03-26T17:28:54","modified_gmt":"2024-03-26T21:28:54","slug":"ageism-shortens-lives-new-studies-confirm-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/78.142.243.82\/~silvercentury\/2024\/03\/ageism-shortens-lives-new-studies-confirm-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Ageism Shortens Lives\u2014New Studies Confirm It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAgeism, and an older person\u2019s perception of aging, may hold the keys to a longer life.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s the first sentence of&nbsp;\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/healthjournalism.org\/blog\/2023\/11\/why-age-bias-has-real-world-health-effects\/\">Why age bias has real world health effects<\/a>,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just published&nbsp; by the Association of Health Care Journalists, which supports excellence in their field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The catalyst was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/gerontologist\/advance-article-abstract\/doi\/10.1093\/geront\/gnad148\/7330318?redirectedFrom=fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a new study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;published in&nbsp;the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gerontologist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The two-year study monitored 5,483 New Jersey residents ages 50-74 and assessed their risk of dying over a nine-year period. The researchers used a metric called \u201csubjective successful aging,\u201d [referring to]&nbsp;subjective criteria used by older people to assess how well they are aging. (The lower the score, the less satisfying the person\u2019s experience of aging.)&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found a significant association. \u201cPeople with low scores (0-5), had a 45 percent chance of dying within nine years, while those with high scores (25-30) had less than a 10 percent chance of dying.\u201d In other words, the&nbsp;olders who were least satisfied with their aging experience were more than four times more likely to die<\/span><b>&nbsp;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over the next nine years than those who felt the most satisfied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These findings add to the growing body of evidence that ageist attitudes harm our health and actually shorten lives<\/span><b>.&nbsp;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of the research has been conducted by Yale\u2019s Becca Levy, PhD, author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking the Age Code: How Your Beliefs About Aging Determine How Long &amp; Well You Live.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;It was her oft-cited <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12150226\/\">finding<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;published over two decades ago, that&nbsp;people with positive self-perceptions of aging lived 7.5 years longer&nbsp;than those who equated aging with loss and decline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just about living longer. It\u2019s about enjoying better physical and mental health<\/span><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;People with more positive attitudes towards aging\u2014fact- rather than fear-based, that is\u2014are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0191004\">less likely to develop dementia<\/a>,<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even if they carry the gene that predisposes them to the disease<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;(Levy again.)&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study led by Julie Ober Allen, PhD, published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2793359\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA Open Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;last summer, studied levels of exposure to \u201ceveryday ageism\u201d (minor but pervasive forms of age discrimination, or microaggressions). Participants were asked to assess their health in four ways: overall physical health, overall mental health, number of chronic conditions and whether they were depressed. The investigators found those who reported more exposure to demeaning messages about aging faced higher health risks on all four measures. Also out last summer, another study led by Levy and published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0277953623001296\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Science &amp; Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;examined \u201cwhether negative age stereotypes contribute to the chronic pain of older persons.\u201d Yes, they do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encountering bias is stressful, and stress contributes to many health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, obesity and diabetes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thischairrocks.com\/2015\/03\/04\/want-older-people-to-be-healthy-end-ageism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age stereotypes become more relevant as we get older<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and thus more likely to become self-fulfilling prophecies.&nbsp;People with negative self-perceptions around aging are less likely to engage in healthy practices like having regular checkups, controlling weight and diet, and exercising. The reverse is also the case. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want to stay healthy as you age?
